Daypacks up to 50 Liters

A good daypack is a key piece of gear for any type of outdoor adventure. Most people look for the ability to carry enough food and water for their day out. Additionally, maybe an extra layer of clothing or two, a first-aid kit, and a headlamp.

The price of daypacks varies quite a bit with the in-built features and carrying ability. Cheap ones are good for carrying a light load.

6 Questions You Must Answer Before Buying A Backpack

  1. What is the intended purpose?
  2. How much weight can I carry?
  3. How long is your average hiking trip going to be?
  4. What is my level of fitness?
  5. Where are my intended trips going to be.
  6. Time of year and expected weather.

 1. What is the intended purpose of your backpack

Weekend Hiking (30-50 liters)

For weekend hiking (1-3 nights) a backpack with a capacity of 30-50 liters should be sufficient. If you need more room than this you are trying to take too much. Be able to pack light requires careful planning as to what you need and self-discipline to only take what you need. It has the great advantage that your hiking becomes more enjoyable as your as less weighed down by your pack.

Multi-day (50-70 liters)

Multi-day trips I have classified as 3-5 nights, a backpack with 50-80 liters capacity will suit for this purpose. These are the most popular backpacks being sold at the moment, as they are able to be used for both shorter trips without being too large, and big enough to accommodate the needs of a hiker planning an extended trip as well.

Extended trip (70+ liters)

Extended trips are trips that last 6 or more nights. However they are also used for winter trips where cold weather gear, tents, sleeping bags and also wet weather gear need to be carried. These packs are also preferred by families hiking where the parents can carry some of the load for the children, making it a much more pleasurable experience for them.

Packing the right gear is essential to having a successful backpacking or hiking adventure

2. How much weight can I carry?

Most people initially overestimate how much weight they can comfortably carry. 30lbs doesn’t seem like much weight but when you consider that you are carrying that for extended periods the weight becomes a much larger burden. This is then combined that whilst carrying this weight you are also hiking a considerable distance and a lot of times this hiking will be on uneven trails which again makes everything a little bit harder.

3. How long is your average hiking trip going to be?

There are 2 components to this question. Firstly how many days are you hiking for? A 7 day hiking trip requires more forethought and equipment than just a quick day hike or an overnight.

Secondly how far do you intend to hike each day, again when most people start out they grossly overestimate how far they can comfortably hike each day carrying a backpack.

In addition to this you must also consider the elevation gains of your intended hike, as this can considerably affect the distance you can hike in a day.

Another consideration for daily hiking distances is the condition of the trail that you are hiking on, the better made the trail the further you can easily hike.

4. What is your level of fitness?
