What We Liked
The main advantage of the Teton Sports Scout 3400 hiking backpack is its weight. At only 4.5 pounds, it is suitable for young campers, boy scouts, and anyone who wants to hike with as little gear weight as possible.
When filled, the Scout 3400 may carry up to 55 liters or its equivalent worth of materials.
In addition, scaling back on the Scout 3400’s material weight does not affect is durability. The hiking backpack is made from 600D Diamond Ripstop. Its internal frame structure ensures that the backpack can withstand extreme hiking conditions and excessive weight put on it.
The Scout 3400 is used to carry supplies and gears typically meant for 2 to 4 days of camping and hiking. However, most hikers using the Scout 3400 find that the pack can reasonably accommodate additional supply weight if needed.
Another advantage of using the Scout 3400 hiking backpack is its lumbar support capability. This hiking backpack is constructed to ensure maximum comfort around the shoulders and lumbar area, especially when hiking for prolonged periods of time with minimal rest.
The Scout 3400’s hip and lumbar areas are filled with open cell foam padding molded to fit most hips and lower backs.
With the Teton Sports Scout 3400 hiking backpack, you do not need to worry about the backpack’s size fitting you or not. The Scout 3400 hiking pack may be used by most teenagers and adults, male or female.
The backpack had built-in adjustable torso and waist lengths so you can easily and comfortably carry the backpack.
When hiking, it’s important for you to be prepared for any type of weather that you may encounter in the trail. That is why the Teton Sports Scout 3400 hiking backpack is equipped with a built-in rain-fly.
It comes in bright yellow color that will both protect your gear from waster and snow while making you and your pack visible enough to your hiking companions. The brightly-colored rain-fly may also deter other animals from scavenging into your pack while you are not looking.
If aesthetics is important to you, you will appreciate the Scout 3400 backpack since it comes in three colors
- Hunter Green,
- Mecca Orange, and
- Coyote Tan
This is another advantage whether you want to have a nice-looking backpack or if you want a pack that will allow you to seamlessly blend into your hiking trail surroundings.

What We Didn’t Like
The Teton Sports Scout 3400 hiking backpack is meant for sorting supplies and gear for 2 to 4 days of camping and hiking. If you intend to camp for longer periods, the Scout 3400 is at a disadvantage due to its limited capacity. You can work around this by packing only the most essential of gears that you need and by stopping for supply runs along your hike trail.
Another minor gripe with the Scout 3400 hiking pack is that it may not fit most sleeping bags in its front straps. This may occur if your sleeping bags are not deflated well to work around this; you may need to use an air compressor to deflate your sleeping bag prior to attaching it to the hiking backpack
Also note that when the Scout 3400 backpack’s main compartment is filled with supplies, the outer pockets may no longer have enough space to expand and accommodate other materials.
Carefully consider this prior to packing so that you can allow ample space for supplies (like water bottles) that will be placed on the pack’s outer pockets.
Most of the disadvantages associated with the Scout 3400 pack are only minor ones that can easily be resolved by careful planning prior to your hiking or camping trips. In terms of durability, the Teton Sports Scout 3400 stands apart from most hiking backpack’s available today.
Nevertheless, it is in your hands if you deem the Scout 3400 hiking backpack as the backpack that meets your specific needs the most.
